Super Robot Wars/J/Max Upgrade Bonuses

Warning: Whatever Max Upgrade Bonus is chosen will remain permanently for the rest of the game and subsequent playthroughs on New Game+. Choose wisely as the game will not stop the player from choosing a Max Upgrade Bonus, even if said unit will not gain any benefit from the bonus.

Unit Upgrade Bonus

After fully upgrading a unit's HP, EN, Mobility, and Armour to max, a message asks you to choose a bonus from the following:

Maximum HP +20%
Maximum Energy +30%
Evasion +30%
Armor +30%
Movement +2
All Terrain rankings of the unit become (S)

Notes and warnings:

  • Terrain rankings with a "-" will remain if the Terrain (S) upgrade is chosen and will not be affected by the Upgrade Bonus. For example, the Nadesico will obtain an S ranking for Air and Space but Ground and Water will remain "-". The only way to change a unit's "-" terrain stat is with parts.
  • Terrain (S) upgrade will not change the Movement Type of a unit. For example, the Duel Gundam AS will remain a Land movement type and while an S-ranking will be given to its Water terrain ranking, the Duel Gundam AS will continue to move hindered underwater. Movement Type of a unit based on terrain can only be changed by parts.

Weapon Upgrade Bonus

Fully upgrading a unit's weapons will grant the ability to choose a bonus from the following which will apply to all weapons:

Range +1
Hit Rate +20%
EN Usage -30%
Ammo x2
Critical Hit rate +20%
All Terrain rankings of the weapons become (S)

Notes and warnings:

  • Weapons with a "-" for its terrain ranking will not be affected by the Terrain (S) upgrade bonus. There is no way to change a unit's weapon ranking from "-" for Water only e.g. Beam weaponry and Great Mazinger's Thunder Break. However, weapons with a Air ranking of "-" can be changed with parts such as the Lifter Module although that would grant it an S-rank anyway in the Air.
  • Range +1 upgrade bonus will not affect attacks with only 1-range.
  • WARNING: The Ammo x2 and EN Usage -30% can be applied to any unit, regardless of whether they will receive any actual benefit from the attacks. A few examples are below of how the unit weapon bonus can be unintentionally wasted.
    • Mazinkaiser can obtain the Ammo x2 upgrade bonus, even though the "Giant Missile" attack has 99 ammunition and the Ammo x2 will not provide additional ammunition to the attack. Although Mazinkaiser KS can benefit from the Ammo x2 bonus, the game will not stop the player from giving the bonus to Mazinkaiser before getting the Kaiser Scrander.
    • The Duel Gundam can obtain the EN Usage -30% weapon upgrade, despite having no weapons that use energy.
    • Moebius Zero can benefit from the EN Usage -30% weapon upgrade as its "Wire-Guided Gunbarrels" attack uses EN. However, only Mu can use the attack when piloting and because he is permanently lost on Stage 48 (Archangel) onwards, the EN Usage -30% weapon upgrade will remain on the Moebius Zero and effectively wasted on the unit on an attack it cannot access for the remainder of the game.
