Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is a series that takes place in an alternate modern society in which Japan has been stripped of its authority and identity as it is now known as Area 11. The series is most known for character designs by the popular manga studio, CLAMP, and its complex plot and subtexts, winning many awards internationally. Code Geass would be split into two seasons instead of one long season like most popular mecha series animated before its time. This method utilized by Sunrise studios would later be used again in its later mecha hit, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and set similar trends with anime series that would air in the future.
Story
In an parallel universe, Japan loses a war with the West united as the Holy Britannian Empire as they are technologically overwhelmed by agile mecha known as Knightmare Frames. On top of unconditionally surrendering to the Holy Britiannian Empire, Japan and its countries are stripped of its national identity and rights as they are reclassified as Area 11 and its people become Elevens. As Elevens become tired of their treatment and social neglect from the Empire, resistance movements sprout from different areas of Area 11 with the goal of true independence. Lelouch Lamperouge, a high school student with many secrets, will stumble upon a power that will change the course of history of those on Area 11.
