Kou Uraki (コウ・ウラキ Kou Uraki) is the protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. Initially a test pilot stationed in the Earth Federation's Torrington Base, he becomes involved in the Gundam hijacking incident and plays a huge role in the events that would be a part of Operation Stardust.

Biography

Not much is shown of Kou's life prior to the start of his military career. After graduating from the Earth Federation Military's officer academy, he would be stationed in the Federation's Torrington Base in Australia. There he served a test pilot and conducted mobile suit tests in the desert terrain. Upon the arrival of the Albion and the GP-01 and GP-02 Gundams, Kou spent much of his time admiring the advanced mobile suits taking on the legacy of the original RX-78 Gundam. However, his time to ponder was cut short when an attack from remnant Zeon forces results with the hijacking of the GP-02 by Anavel Gato, prompting Kou to quickly take action and board the GP-01. Although he was barely able to fend off the GP-02 and the other Zeon mobile suits, a quick decision was made to keep Kou in the GP-01 since there was no time to waste with the pursuit of the GP-02, armed and loaded with nuclear weapons and Kou managed to handle the GP-01 well with no prior experience. Kou would struggle, but quickly adapt as he had no prior combat experience and had to face the likes Anavel Gato.

As the Albion continues the pursuit in space, Kou tries hard to prove that he is still worthy of being the GP-01's pilot despite the presence of newly transferred veterans wishing to pilot something as legendary as the Gundam. His dedication catches the eye of the Gundam's engineer, Nina Purpleton, who alongside Kou collects data and tunes the GP-01's performance. However, he recklessly take the GP-01 to battle in space without any space type equipment and is overwhelmed, essentially causing the death of his mentor and superior South Burning. While awaiting repairs on the moon, he wanders off with doubts of his potential and thoughts of the time spent under Lieutenant Burning. There he would be a disabled mechanic named Kelly Layzner, who helps him regain confidence in himself as a mobile suit pilot and person while they work on Kelly's hobby project in his junk yard. Unknowingly, Kou does not realize that the project is the mobile armor Val Varo that would attack the Albion until the last second. Kelly and Kou would have a duel on the moon, with Kou emerging victorious in an upgraded GP-01. However, the movements of the Zeon Remnant Delaz Fleet was hastening and on a patrol mission to watch over a Federation naval review, Gato and his GP-02 quickly infiltrated the review. Using the nuclear warhead loaded in the GP-02, Gato single-handedly wiped 2/3rds of the Federations entire space fleet. Kou manages to pursue Gato and in a showdown between the two Gundams, Kou manages to convincingly fight on par with Gato, but as a result, both of the GP Gundams are destroyed.

With the Federation fleet in shambles and a major offense by the Delaz Fleet imminent and the Albion in need of more firepower, the Albion travels to the La Vie en Rose to request the acquisition of the classified GP-03. There, they would be told that the GP project was suspended and the Albion was to be confined until further notice. But, under the orders of Captain Synapse, Kou steals the GP-03 and uses it to stop the Delaz fleet from executing a colony drop. However, the Federation also had their own motives as they used a artillery solar system to wipe out the colony being dropped and disable Kou's GP-03. In the aftermath of Operation Stardust, Kou was arrested and brought to trial. He was given a much lighter sentence of a year of labor since he was following the orders of Captain Synapse. Later the incident and events of Operation Stardust and the GP Project itself was decided to be erased and classified out of existence which also nullified his crime and sentence. He would then later be relocated to the Federation's North American Oakley Base where he would reunite with Keith, Nina, and Mora.

Personality

Kou may seem like a plain average guy in an army uniform capable of piloting mobile suits, but he is very capable of putting sweat and blood to keep up with his opponents. He is also very knowledgeable about mobile suits since he has a technical interest in mobile suits and carriers. Still considered by most to be fresh and inexperienced as a soldier, he is prone to having doubts about his capabilities compared to those who are much more experienced. While initially nervous and shaky due to the lack of live combat experience, he is able to quickly leave the experiences of defeat behind and strive to become someone worthy of stepping into a Gundam. Outside of his mobile suit, he is a nice and slightly awkward person. However, in the presence of battle, a hot-blooded switch will flip within him which at times may impede his judgement and cause him to make questionable decisions. Other Gundam games have jokingly referred to Kou as the Phantom Ace due to Kou's kill record during Operation Stardust being classified and wiped away from existence.

Kou also sometimes displays childish tendencies that explain his somewhat awkward relationship progression with Nina Purpleton and his hatred for carrots.

Appearances In Super Robot Wars

Kou Uraki's appearance proves that a Universal Century Gundam pilot does not necessarily have to be a newtype, as he is capable of standing among even the big shots. While his starting stats and mobile suit may give players a hard time, he is usually granted the spirit command Gain and the mobile armor GP-03 to compensate in the long run. Like any well-invested unit and pilot, Kou will become a late game monster.

Kou's famous GP-03 beam cannon point-blank shot is an attack in Super Robot Wars for the GP-03 and it is actually a deadly finisher. His strong dislike for carrots has been a running gag during intermission scenes.
