Kamille Bidan (カミーユ・ビダン, Kamīyu Bidan) is the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Kamille is a troubled young man, growing up in a time of prejudice and oppression towards spacenoids. He grew up in the Gryps space colony, formerly called Green Noah which then became the field base of the Earth Federation's tyrannical Titans elite unit, an organization which his parents would also work under.

Biography

Zeta Gundam

After a scuffle with a Titans officer Jerid Messa, Kamille is detained by the Titans at their base in the Gryps colony. During an Anti-Earth Union Group raid to steal the new prototype Gundam Mk. II mobile suits, he escapes and helps the AEUG steal two of the three Gundam Mk. II units. Under the tutelage of A.E.U.G. officer Quattro Bajeena and former Titans officer Emma Sheen, Kamille later becomes one of AEUG's top pilots despite having a civilian background, a feat comparable to that of Amuro Ray.

During the course of the war with the Titans, Kamille witnesses the death of his parents and comrades. Although he is a nice person in general, he tends to act on his emotions and personal judgement rather than logic. This has locked him into deep rivalries with other Titans soldiers such as Jerid Messa and Paptimus Scirocco. Kamille's life is changed again when he meets a strange young female Titans pilot. Her name was unknown, and was referred to as Four Murasame because she was the fourth newtype to come from the Murasame Newtype Labs. The two fall in love and were torn apart time and again. Being a cyber-newtype, she was mentally unstable and attacked Kamille anytime her Psyco Gundam was near. Like Lalah Sune before her, she cements Kamille's side of the rivalry with Jerid. While finally escaping the Titans' clutches, she was killed in battle by Jerrid to save Kamille's life.

As the battle of the AEUG and the Titans approach its conclusion in the Gryps Conflict, Kamille begins tapping into the mysterious bio-sensor in the Zeta Gundam as his Newtype abilities grew, unleashing a power never before seen. Kamille used the newfound power to destroy Yazan Gable's Hambrabi. Kamille's anger towards Yazan's enjoyment of killing people and saying Kamille would join them soon triggered the bio-sensor and caused the Zeta Gundam was covered by a purple glow. Kamille used the power to extend the length of the Zeta Gundam's beam saber and sliced Yazan's Hambrabi in two though Yazan was able to eject in the escape pod. In his final battle with Scirocco, Kamille proved to have the stronger mind, having gained the strength of all the people he loved who had died during the war. Despite impaling the Zeta Gundam into Scirocco's The O, a dying Paptimus Scirocco still managed to unleash a mind-crippling blow to Kamille Bidan, leaving him in a comatose state.

ZZ Gundam

At the start of the series Kamille is brought to the Shangri-La colony in side 1 for medical treatment. His condition has worsened since the end of the battle, now in a vegetative state and completely unresponsive to anyone or anything around him. When the Argama is taken over by their old enemy Yazan Gable and a group of Shangri-La junk dealers, he is also taken hostage. However, one of the junk dealers, Judau Ashta, is a latent newtype and his presence causes the comatose Kamille to consciously move for the first time since the concluding battle at Gryps. Kamille motions Judau to take his hand and the two experience a newtype reaction. After the incident is resolved Kamille is transferred off the Argama to a hospital in the colony and remains there with Fa Yuiry, who eventually retires from the AEUG to watch over him.

Some time after the Argama leaves Shangri-La, Fa and Kamille travel to Earth, settling in Dublin, Ireland where Kamille is admitted into a hospital with Fa as his nurse. When the war with Neo Zeon brings the Argama to Ireland they reunite with Kamille and Fa and learn that, while he is still vocally unresponsive, Kamille has clearly recovered much of his mental functions. He plays a key role in saving Elpie Ple and the Argama from a Neo-Zeon attack, communicating to her as well as the rest of the Gundam Team through telepathy and guiding them to victory. Later, as the bulk of Neo Zeon heads towards Dublin, Kamille begins to have convulsions as he senses the rebirth of the Psyco Gundam Mark II and that its pilot, Ple Two, is close to awakening. When it's discovered Haman Karn is dropping a colony on Dublin, the Gundam Team decides to smuggle Kamille out of the city, knowing that he would try and fight to save the people. Kamille resigns from the fight only when Judau reassures him that he will do all that he can to save the people. Sensing that Judau has inherited his will, Kamille vocally responds for the first time since the beginning of the series. Although the reply was only a soft yeah, it signaled Kamille's full recovery as he has been put at ease with the knowledge that the AEUG is in good hands. Despite this, the situation turns from good to worse as the colony makes contact with Dublin, killing millions of people.

Fa once again finds him and comforts him, and the two then watch as their friends fly into space, still determined to defeat Haman. At the end of the First Neo Zeon War it appears that Kamille has completely recovered mentally as he is seen running along a beach with Fa in the series finale, showing that he is now living a peaceful life with Fa.

A New Translation

Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino noted on the official website of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation that he intends to retcon Kamille's tragic fate at the end of the Gryps Conflict to something a little more optimistic in order to better balance out the series' initial bleak tone. The 3-part film adaptation and recollection of the original TV series met wide success in Japan with the new ending resulting in Kamille resisting Scirocco's crippling mind attack and reuniting with Fa at the conflict's conclusion. This outcome has been a long thought about alternate ending to Kamille's story, although it is uncertain if this change would completely retcon or force changes in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ as the latter is still accepted as canon in the Universal Century timeline.

Personality

Kamille particularly hated his feminine-sounding name and asserts his manhood by developing a hobby in amateur mobile suit creation and martial arts. He has a strong affinity for mobile suit piloting and customization as the son of the developers of the Gundam Mk. II. He also showed willingness to fight by stealing a Gundam to step on a Titans officer. He also tends to be brash, impulsive, somewhat selfish, prone to acting on his own judgement, and arrogant in his own right. This leads to him getting more than his fair share of abuse than the previous Mobile Suit Gundam protagonist, Amuro Ray, both mentally and physically. However, he eventually comes under Char Aznable's influence as the series progresses. This mentor-protege relationship plays a great role in shaping Kamille from an emotionally vulnerable, angst-ridden teenager to a matured soldier. In the manga Mobile Suit Gundam in UC 0099: Moon Crisis Kamille apparently develops a distaste for battle due to his war experiences and dedicates himself to protecting life by becoming a doctor.

Classic Timeline

Advance Timeline

In this timeline, Kamille has already beaten the Titans. However, the Giganos Empire has brought Four and Rosamie back from the grave and Kamille can only convince one of them while the other must die. Kamille can also convince Elpeo Puru and make her join the Londo Bell's side, sparing Puru 2 if Puru manages to convince her.

Alpha Timeline

In Alpha, players will take part in the majority of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam's plot. However, the secret involving Four's survival is to ironically let her die. Rosamia will also survive. At the end of the game, as long as Four is alive, Kamille will always survive Scirocco's mental attack, but if he deals the final blow and she is dead, he will fly into a coma. This is not canon to the rest of the Alpha series.

In Alpha Gaiden, the Titans still have control of Rosamia. The early chapters of the game involve the final showdown against the Titans, who survived Alpha 1, with the exception of Scirocco who died in Alpha 1. That changes when the Neo Granzon shows up and catapults them into the future after blowing up during a climactic battle. In the final battle with Kashim and the Innocent, he sends out Rosamia in the Psyco Gundam Mk. II after he'd nearly erased her mind. If you deploy the Zeta Gundam with Kamille you get a heart-rending moment as Kamille is forced to shoot her down as she attacks your ship. Then, Kashim fires a ton of nuclear missiles he dug up and tries to wipe out every non-Innocent off the face of the Earth. Kamille flies into a rage and gives Kashim King a nearly perfect copy of the speech he gave Scirocco in the final episode of Zeta, accompanied by a boost in the Zeta's stats due to unlocking the Biosensor and the Waverider Crash. If you don't deploy Kamille in the Zeta, Rosamia's life is spared. This is considered canon in the Alpha timeline.

In Alpha 2, Kamille is forced to fight his mentor Quattro Bagina, now under his previous name as Char Aznable and leading and Neo-Zeon. Kamille runs into his eternal rival Yazan Gable, the last of the Titans, who has also defected to Neo Zeon. The two continue to clash throughout the game, with both surviving in the end.

In Alpha 3, Kamille fights Yazan, as Yazan has become a part of Z.A.F.T. along with Daimos's Miwa. He finally manages to kill Yazan late in the game, though. During the GONG event, Quattro Bagina's spirit tells him that he is proud of Kamille and tells Kamille to fight for mankind's future.

Destiny Timeline

In this timeline, Kamille mentions that most of the A.E.U.G. are dead before the game started. He gets infected by the virus from Big O at one point. He also rescues Roux and Judau from the Invaders with the help of the Gaia Saver team. When Usso's mom was held hostage by the Zanscare Empire, Kamille compares it to the time his mother got held hostage. Any time Kamille uses the Waverider attack, Four's spirit shows up during the attack. On Stage 30 of Angel Halo Route, Kamille, Judau, and Char must have a combined kill count of 300 or more to unlock Haman. None of them can have 0 kills. This can only be done on second or higher playthrough.

MX Timeline

Kamille in Super Robot Wars MX starts from post-Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam recovering from the battle at the Gryps II. He joins the party in the Re-GZ or the Dijeh SE-R. He can be reassigned back into the Zeta Gundam and gain the powerful Waverider Crash attack.

In this timeline, he was held captive in Fort Severn until the Freiden team rescued him. He joins in the Gundam Mk. II, but he can be moved back into the Zeta Gundam. At one point, Jamil decides to surrender to Dr. Karon under the condition that all newtypes such as Amuro Ray, Kamille Bidan, Quatro Bageena, Tifa Adil, Jamil and even Fa would be handed over to him in exchange of allowing the rest to go free. Under Dr. Karon, they learn about his philosophy behind the existence of newtypes and are sent to Neo Zeon. Four Murasame and the others would later rescue them.
