Judau Ashta (ジュドー・アーシタ Judō Āshita) is the 14-year old protagonist in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.

Biography

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ

Judau and his friends are poor junk dealers based in the space colony of Shangri-La in Side 1. Judau is rather loudmouthed and straightforward, but has a good heart and displays powerful Newtype abilities. He has a younger sister named Leina whom he cares very deeply for, almost to the point where he can be considered to have a sister complex. Their parents moved to another colony to find work and they send money back to them. While scavenging for junk one day, Judau comes across the escape pod of Titans pilot Yazan Gable, who managed to survive the Gryps Conflict that concluded Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Discovering that the Argama was in port at the same colony, Yazan forcefully brings Judau and his friends along to help attack the ship. Judau breaks free from Yazan in order to steal the Zeta Gundam and attempt to sell it, but fail. He and his friends continue numerous attempts and still fail, usually ending up saving the Argama instead from Yazan or Neo Zeon troops. They ultimately befriend the crew and join the AEUG, where they become known as the "Gundam Team," with Judau piloting the Zeta Gundam.

Judau's mission eventually becomes personal when the Neo Zeon kidnap Leina. He often goes into battle against orders, desperate to save his sister. Strangely, Neo Zeon leader Haman Karn becomes fascinated with Judau, almost to a point where she has a possible romantic interest in him. Although they are enemies, she always offers Judau a chance to join her side, which Judau always refuses. Judau also seems to attract other Newtypes such as the Neo Zeon pilot Elpie Ple, who also has a romantic crush on Judau.

Eventually, Judau receives the Double Zeta Gundam from Anaheim Electronics and becomes its pilot. He almost loses his resolve to fight when it appears that Leina has been killed. However, he senses that she is alive and continues piloting despite everyone thinking that he has lost his mind. In the climactic Battle of Axis, Judau defeats Haman in a decisive mobile suit duel. Haman ends up killing herself, wondering how a person like Judau can still be so kind. Judau is reunited with Leina in the end, who was alive after all thanks to the intervention of Sayla Mass. At the conclusion of the First Neo Zeon War, Judau and fellow pilot Roux Louka part from the AEUG and join the Jupiter Fleet to start a new life.

Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam: Skull Heart

Judau, operating under the alias of Grey Stork, seeks out Tobia Arronax during the aftermath of the Jupiter Empire uprising. With knowledge of his exploits as a pirate under the Crossbone Vanguard, Judau manages to enlist the help of Tobia and the remaining Crossbone Vanguard crew that are now working in disguise as a waste and transportation organization called Blackrow Shipping. He reveals that his fleet was unfortunately carrying out Crux Dogatie and the Jupiter Empire's schemes unknowingly prior to their downfall, but because of that he was able to learn about the existence of the Jupiter Empire's plot to copy the combat data of Amuro Ray during the One Year War to create the ultimate AI for mobile suit combat. Judau, Tobia, and the Blackrow crew venture out to a remnant Jupiter Empire Base to find their new mass-produced Amakusa mobile suits all controled by bio-brains of Amuro's AI. Tobia's sorts out in a disguised Crossbone Gundam X-1 Skull Heart and Judau sorts out in his worn out disguised Gundam ZZ he now calls the Gump. Together, they are barely able to wipe out the Amakusas and the facility and escape its destruction in a similar fashion as Amuro fleeing A Bao A Qu.

Personality

Judau comes off as cocky, smart-mouthed, and falling prey to greed during the beginning. But his need for money is only because he wishes to help his little sister, Leina Ashta, go to private school and have a better future than he will. Because of this, he often skips out on school to work as a junk dealer and bring in materials for money and even tries to avoid Beecha at times to avoid giving him a cut. He also resorted to stealing the Zeta Gundam multiple times before becoming a full-time pilot. Above all else, Judau can't stand adults, blaming them for the war that is now occurring. While the way he says it may cause him to seem naive and short-sighted, he is not entirely wrong.

But his attitude slowly begins to change as he later becomes a pilot, soon wishing to end the war while trying to protect Leina. He believes that the war should be stopped and views the fighting as pointless as more and more lives are being lost each day, some of which have included his friends, such as Ple. His views on Bright and the rest of the Argama also change as well, becoming good allies with all of them and even changing their own opinions regarding the war, such as when Bright had the chance to destroy a colony but did not when Judau convinced him.

He is not afraid to speak his mind to anyone no matter how harsh or blunt it may seem, as sugar coating it would not make the situation any better. In some conversations, especially in the Super Robot Wars series, this has often raised a more questions and even doubts from his fellow teammates. Judau also addresses others around him extremely informally, ignoring any form of military rank, seniority, or authority. Even an aged Judau will still call other aged men Gramps when he himself is old enough to be one.

Skills & Capabilities

Judau is not quite skilled in combat compared to his predecessors, but does know how to sneak around at times to avoid detection. His real power comes in handling a mobile suit. While sloppy at handling the Zeta Gundam, he manages to quickly improve and learn about mobile suits to perform well with the ZZ Gundam. He was also able to effectively pilot other suits such as the Hyaku-Shiki and defeat enemies his friends were unable to.

His most notable ability is his Newtype powers, which may be the strongest for his time, or at least rivaling Char Aznable according to Haman. With his powers, he is able to safely combine into the ZZ Gundam without the need for two more pilots during the finale, and can even create a barrier to survive some attacks when pushed to his limits.
