Athrun Zala (アスラン・ザラ Asuran Zara) is a character from both Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. Initially an antagonist, he becomes a recurring character in the conflicts that would occur in the Cosmic Era Gundam SEED timeline.

Personality

Athrun is a young man of duty who tries to accomplish his missions and does what he is ordered to. While quiet and soft spoken, he is an adept leader. However, as he starts to encounter and become aware of who his enemies are along with the loss of his comrades, Athrun begins to question what he is fighting for. Through the events in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Athrun begins to realize that he needs to not fight for revenge or justice, but for peace and an end to conflicts.

However, in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, he stumbles upon the same doubts that have plagued him the the previous series return when he rejoins ZAFT. Although he has matured, he becomes more hesitant, often wondering whether his role in ZAFT will allow him to obtain his goal of maintaining peace and order. Even so he tries his hardest to make an impact on his platoon on the Minerva, especially Shinn Asuka, who Athrun sees as a resemblance to his former self.

Athrun has a hobby of tinkering with machines and has constructed a pet robotic bird, Torii, for Kira Yamato and many versions of the Cosmic Era Haros for Lacus Clyne.

Athrun, like his counterpart, Kira Yamato, is also a powerful pilot with great stats, a steroid SEED mode, and a great unit. His offensive stats, unlike Kira, are mostly focused towards close combat as his melee stats are higher than Kira's and the mobile suits he pilots are more suited at short ranges.
